Slavery is because the yankees want to portray everyone in the South as an inbred, trailer park living drunken slob. Why would all the poor white who almost none had slaves died to protect those who did and who mostly didnt fight. Why were I live in the Ozarks of arkansas where there were no slaves did 1/2 the people support the south.
It was about states rights and the right of people to control their own lives. Letting their neighbors represent them instead of some elitists living thousands of miles away in Washington who know nothing about their lives.

I am not sure the great Southern General Longstreet said this but he did in the Turner movie:
"hell, we should have first freed all the slaves, then..left the Union"
When talking to the English officer, and his remarks about Queen Victoria and England never, never, would aid the South for the sin of slavery.
But it was about "slavery', personal economic gain and the "fear' of slave revolts, by-the-way The south attacked first, after
they mustered the states militias', was sort of a "Pearl Harbor",
Well, at least the war ended, faster than the one we are now engaged in?
Longstreet was correct. He also knew that Grant, Sheridan and Sherman were to be faced, he was neither confident nor hopeful after Shiloh, a fairly "early' battle. It was the battle that told the South the Yankees, well would never give up.

Slavery was the face of Southern injustices to many in the South. It was obvious they wanted to separate from the Union for many years due to the many differences between the North and South. The South's economy came from agriculture, which was dependent on slavery and the North's came from Industry.
The South knew if slavery was taken away their economy would fall and they felt the federal government and the union had too much power over their states and their lives. Though slavery was once as common in the North as it was in the South the then current government was hoping to abolish it, as seen by the border disputes and bloody Kansas.
So the South, in their eyes, were fighting for state's rights and the independence to govern their own lands, though the rights they were most concerned about was their right to keep slaves, as their economy relied on it.
Once slavery was abolished, the South collapsed and still has not recovered economically.

Unfortunately, I was "educated" about the War of Northern Agreession in a yankee school (Wisconsin), but my mother has shared our heritage with me and helped me to understand a little bit about history:
1) History books are just as subjective and one-sided as the news media. Over time, all history gets skewed and distorted.
2) Lincoln has been glorified as an abolitionist when in reality he has a slave owner who only wanted to keep the Union together.
And here are two common misconceptions of the War of Northern Aggression, as your question asked:
1) It was all about slavery (or even mostly), and
2) It's over

That it is titled the "War of Northern Aggression." The victors get naming rights and we chose "Civil War." Just be glad we didn't name it "The Rebellion of Prejudiced, Uncultured Southern Upstarts Who Got a Beatdown."

That is an easy one: that Lincoln was the a great emancipator; that the war was over Slavery; that Sherman war on Civilians was acceptable; that the Yankees did not commit war crimes. If you want more let me know. God Bless You and Our Southern people.

This war was about states rights and limiting the power of the federal government. The tyranny of Lincoln prevailed to the shame of our forefathers. The south shall rise!
