In Western astrology, the rising sign represents "the mask", or the way you come across to others.

Let's say you are a Virgo sun with Pisces rising.

Right now the long-term transit big energy involved Jupiter and Pluto in Sagittarius, Uranus in Pisces, and Saturn in Leo until September when it enters Virgo.

So internally, Virgo is prone to feel the effects of what has been a long transformation involving family, home and roots in the community (4th house), and this year Jupiter brings a feeling of optimism in these areas. But for Pisces rising, people are apt see you transforming in your terms of your career and reputation and thinking you are lucky (make sure you don't behave underhandedly in career reputation matters because others are watching this and thinking you are lucky).

Virgo's 12th house Saturn has been undoing old patterns and karma and asking Virgo to beware of doing things in secret they wouldn't want the word to know, and this continues until Saturn enters Virgo from September into 2009 when Virgo is asked to reform their image. Others, however, are apt to see you as serious about daily routines and work until Septermber when you appear to be more serious about partnerships.

For Virgo, Uranus is in Pisces, so you may experiece unpleasant suprises in partnerships or feel or act in a mannter that attracts unusual people. For Pisces, this is the first house, so others are apt to see you as changing suddenly and unpredictable.

I'm a Capricorn. You really have to look at aspects, too, because I think the rising sign is more about subtleties. I have Pisces rising with a lot of aspects and Juno conjunct my Ascendant, and it explains so much for me. p.s., If your family all looked just alike, how do you tell each other apart? :-)

Not sure about it being a second sign (and I'm probably not 100% right on this) but I think it has something to do with your personality, how you act.
