So, my girlfriend and I just got a domestic partnership. Trouble is, now we don't know what to call ourselves. Girlfriend doesn't sound serious, partner sounds like a business associate, wife sounds too girly (ah, the difficulties of a butch-butch couple) and reminds us too much of the tradition of female oppression that marriage has been, significant other is just too long and politically correct, spouse sounds so... government form-ish... lover doesn't sound respectable and is too sexual for casual conversation... what else is there?!

I'm not so butch, but my "partner" is trans, and so I've found that.... Partner sounds like business, but I also don't want to include gender sometimes depending on who i'm talking to.

I like to just say "my other half". He really is my other half!
