First of all Vegas is not cheap like it was 10 to 15 years ago. The slots don't pasy as much and the food is expensive, especially the buffets. If you have a car, go to the off strip hotels, like the Green Valley Ranch, south of town, or Red Rock Inn, west of town, or go to Freemont Street. These places your money will last longer and food prices are also less expensive.

Secondly, do all of the free stuff:

1. Number one on my list is to watch the fountains displays in front of the Bellagio hotel. It usually runs every 15 minutes in summers starting at 3:00 PM; runs continuously until about midnight. Each show is different (there are more than 20 different tunes choreographed) so stay and watch at least 2 or 3. ALSO, go inside the Bellagio hotel to its lobby and view the beautiful glass sculptured ceiling AND the seasonal floral arrangements in the Atrium.

2. The “Sirens of TI” show (spectacular) in from of the Treasure Island Hotel; it runs every 90 minutes starting at about 4:30 PM. Simply stand on the sidewalk in front of the TI Hotel.

3. The volcano erupt in from of the Mirage Hotel; starting at dark until midnight. Again, just stand on the sidewalk in front of the hotel.

4. Go down to Fremont Street and see the light shows. There are usually 3 or 4 different shows, starting after dark (about 8:30PM) and lasting about 5 or 10 minutes each.

5. Go to the RIO hotel to see the Masquerade in the Sky show. It is like Mardi Gras parade, only suspended from the ceiling over the gambling floor. It runs every 60 minutes starting about 3:00 PM; the last show starts at 9:30 PM..

6. Go to the MGM Grand hotel to see the Lion habitat. This is better then the tiger habitat at the Mirage Hotel because there are usually trainers in with lions to keep them active.

7. Go to the Mirage hotel to see the white tigers that Siegfried and Roy show used. This is kinda passe because the tigers rarely do anything but sit and stare.

8. Go in Caesars Palace and walk through the Forum shops to the first fountain (its spectacular) then take the first fork to the left to go see the aquarium. Then continue on through the shops to the second fountain and wait for the show to start.

9. Go into the Flamingo hotel to see their animal habitat with flamingos and penguins.

10 The Excalibur hotel also has a free show starting at 10:00 AM until 10:00 PM.

If you are a Star Trek Fan, go to the Hilton (off the strip) for "Star Trek The Experience"; it cost about $25.

People go to Vegas to sightsee as well as gamble. You can see most of the stuff on the Strip by walking, so you don't need a rental car. There is a free monorail between Bellagio and the Monte Carlo Hotel and also another free one between Excalibur, Luxor, and Mandalay Bay. The one on the opposite side of the street which runs from the MGM to the Hilton you have to pay to ride. There is a free bus between Harrahs Hotel to the RIO Hotel that runs every half hour. There is also a free bus that you can get outside the Barbary Coast Casino that will take you to the Orleans and some other off strip casinos.

Plan which hotels/casinos you want to visit each day so you can make the most of your walking and the free monorails and scuttles. When you get to Vegas you will probably have in your hotel room a free guide to the city called either "What's ON" , “Showbiz”or "Las Vegas Today". These are helpful guises as they have a map of the Strip and city with the hotels marked, current hotel shows and prices, plus useful coupons. They also list hotel restaurants and buffets time sand prices.

The hotel coffee shops and buffets are now much more expensive than they were years ago. So, if you want to eat for less go to the food courts located in many hotels and also try one of the several Denny's restaurants on the Strip (one in the Casino Royal hotel/casino and another across from the Monte Carlo hotel/casino). There are also a number of McDonald, Burger King, and other fast food places on the Stip. You can get breakfast and dinner buffets a few dollars less at the Imperial Palace hotel/casino and at the Gold Coast hotel/casino. Buffets also cost less at the Circus Circus hotel/casino and in Fremont St hotel/casinos. There is an Outback Steak House in the Casino Royale Hotel and another across from the RIO. There is a Cheesecake Factory and a Planet Hollywood in Caesars Forum shops. There is a Margerittaville in the Flamingo hotel. I recommend Tony Roma’s, a ribs and chicken restaurant; one in the Stardust hotel/casino, one on Fremont St and another on Sahara Ave near Paradise Rd.

Hire a car and go and see the countryside around Vegas. The Grand Canyon is 3-4 Hrs away, the Hoover dam is an hour, Death valley is 2 hrs, Zion national park is 2 hrs. It will break your trip up and give you some breathing space from the drinking, gambling and fornication that takes place there.

Also, go shopping. Theres a big mall just past the Mandalay bay with a whole load of outlet shops (Nike, Reebok and other big name stuff) where you can fill your wardrobe for £5.59! Honest!

Oh and hiring a car is not that expensive. A PT cruiser convertible can cost under 200 dollars for a weeks hire...

Here are a few tips that I keep in mind when traveling to Las Vegas...

1) Always pack eyedrops and chapstick, especially in the summer months. It is in the dessert ya know!

2) Instead of paying $5 for a drink, plop down in front of a machine and have a waitress bring you a free drink. Don't forget to tip the waitress. Common Courtesy.

3) Set a certain amount that you are willing to spend on gambling a day. Once that is gone, find something else to do. It keeps you from losing to much money and also helps you keep a budget.

4) If you win big on a slot, cash out but do not turn in the slip for the money. Instead, put the slip in your pocket and put another $20 or $50 in the maching and keep playing that way. It keeps you from spending to much back into the machine and it feels good when you have several tickets to cash out and you get a nice amount back!

5) Always try to walk to your destination. If walking is not feesable, then take a taxi but remember to tell them "I want the quickest route" so they do not go the back way. Usually saves you $5 -$10 dollars.

6) When arriving at McCarran Airport, I find it to be better to go ahead and take a taxi as opposed to a shuttle. Shuttle services are a bit cheaper, however they stop off at each hotel along the strip whether they have a guest staying there or not. What should have taken a 15 minute Drive from the airport to MGM, took me 2 hours by shuttle. To me the time was not worth saving the $4.

7) If you ride in a taxi, get as many people along for the ride as you can and split the cost.

8) Every hotel you visit, be sure to ask for coupon books. Some are not that impressive but some offere 2 for 1 meals or $10 match play on slots.

9) Leave your money (except what you have alotted for the day) in the room safe. That way your not tempted to spend to much. Plus you have to remember to have money to make it home on. I was stuck in the Cincinnati Airport for 2 days coming back. Luckily I had stuck some money back for my return and had even left $40 in my car so I would be able to get it out of Airport Parking!

10) Get involved in mid-day slot tournaments and texas hold em tournaments. The big players seem to come out more at night so there are better odds during the day. Plus, it is just all out fun to do!

I have lived there for a few years and my advise is not to spend all of your money in the same casino.

drinks are free with play and sometimes you have to track down the waitress but always make sure you tip them even if its only a dollar or they wont come back.

watch the card tables before you join if you are playing blackjack or poker etc. that way you have a better chance if you know if the people at the table keep winning or losing.

I had the best luck playing at the older casinos, grocery stores, or the gas stations.

Dont let the cab drivers take you off the strip. they love to take all the "back ways" but it ends up costing you more money. Walking is preferred if you can. just be careful, there are alot of pedestrians hit by cars.....Good luck

A couple of things that you'll enjoy:

(1) The breakfast buffet at the Bellagio
(2) A Gondola ride on the first floor (!) at the Venetian

One thing to avoid like the plague unless you have some sort of death wish -

The plane trip to the Grand Canyon - I have never been so scared in my life - better than the ride on the top of the Stratosphere - oh how the family laughed when we were all travel sick. Remember how the Pope used to kiss the ground on landing anywhere - that was me at the Grand Canyon.

My husband and I LOVED staying at Paris and next time want to try the Rio. It seemed really nice and the shuttle goes back and forth fromt he strip to it. I DON'T like downtown even though the Golden Nugget was nice to stay at--I was uncomfortable with the area people. Wear comfortable shoes---a lot of walking done.
