I heart my laptop!!! You can bring it with you on planes or just in the car. Except for mine takes forever to charge and doesn't last long once it is. I should've gotten a Dell. Plus they are quieter, you don't have to constantly be clicking a mouse. You can just tap the pad, and typing is quieter too. So yep...laptops are the best! =)

In my experience, you get more bang for your buck with a Desktop. I use mine to run my home's entertainment system (I even use it as a DVR for TV shows!). Its much more versitle in the sense that you can upgrade the heck out of it - and you can usually get a lot faster machine. If you're into gaming or multi-media, then I would suggest a desktop.
The only draw back is that it has zero mobility (especially since I ahve everything plugged into it!) I have a portable USB hard drive to haul big files like movies, games, and music around, but obviously I can only plug that into someone elses computer. Despite that, in my opinion, unless you're on the move a lot and want/need mobility, go with a desktop.
