1 x 1 = 1 lot of 1 = one
2 x 4 = 2 lots of 4 = 8
1/2 x 1/2 = 1/2 lot of 1/2 (that is, half of a half) = 1/4

The calculations are identical if you put them in the same form:
1/1 x 1/1 = 1/1
1/2 x 1/2 = 1/4
You multiply the numerators to get a new numerator (product) then you multiply the denominators to get a new denominator (product).

because a/b *c/d = (a*c)/(c*d)
1*1 = 1/1 * 1/1 = 1/1 =1
1/2 * 1/2 = (1*1) / (2*2) = 1/4

also, although 1x1 =1, 2x2=4 so when you multiply fractions you have to times the numerator and denominator, making 1/4

its like 1 lot of 1 is one. - one lot of one whole cake= one cake
half a lot of half a cake = 1/4 of a cake.
