It depends on the species of hamster. It is also hard when they're young though I've been breeding Syrians long enough I can tell the first day they're born! With all of them, it is determined by the distance of the urethra to the anus. Shorter distances mean its a female (you can also see the vaginal opening between the two), males have a longer distance and the presence of testicles in Syrians and Chinese hamsters. Campbells Russian Dwarves and Winter White Russian Dwarves will have a visible scent gland on their stomach). Roborovskis are very hard to find.

Unfortunately, I just did a quick search and found that there are no good sites with pictures. I will make sure to add some good ones to the Great Lakes Hamster Club website when I launch it.

Most of my experience is with Syrians and females do have a musk odor. Usually this is only once every 4-5 days when they come into heat but some of mine have it all the time. Unlike most other rodents, male Syrians do not have any noticable musk odor.

The male will be longer at the rear and sort of squared. The female is shorter and comes to a point where the tail begins. Regardless of the sexes, hamsters will fight after they reach a certain age and it is best to separate them. If you do have a male and a female and want to breed them...when the female is ready, she will stand perfectly still and raise up her rear when you touch her.

It's pretty hard to tell. I didn't know about the ones I had until one of them had babies. I have heard both the same things you did, but neither really tells you for sure--you have to guess.

You should be able to actually see the knackies if you look carefully. Also make sure you feel, the eye can deceive.

Try putting some dirty hamster porn magazine in the hamster cage. If they're all around the magazine, they're male. If they're unpleased and away from the magazine, they're female.
