Not unusual at all. Cursive handwriting is considered too dated to teach in a world of laptops and hand helds. I don't know of many junior high or high school students that are learning or have learned it. They just want it to be legible if it's not typed.

No, I don't think that is unusual. A lot of countries do not teach it and given the ubiquity of keyboards, it is a waste of time. He would be better off learning to type at an early age.
This is not to say that penmanship is not important. Currently, if an essay question on the ACT is illegible, it is thrown out. I realize this may be a ways off for your son, but it is an example of a high-stakes situation where poor penmanship could really hurt him.

No, it's not unusual. There's a growing movement towards phasing out cursive from the school curriculum entirely. The time spared can be invested in something more practical.

I suppose I don't know much about the curriculum in the US, because I am from Canada.. but I have never heard of a school ANYWHERE that doesn't teach cursive.. I think that is very odd.. it would make me wonder what else the school is not teaching my child.
