You usually get a violation because someone thinks your answer is lewd or too sexual in nature. Yes, there are people here with no humor that see these comments and feel the need to report you for abuse (rather than just ignoring you).

Ask a question or submit an answer that someone takes offense to and reports you for OR that gets snagged by the Yahoo filter (like swear words, name of another Y!A user in the Q)- if it causes your Q or Answer to get deleted, you have yourself a violation (to be reported, you technically have to be in violation of to TOS/Community Guidelines, but it is often abused by disgruntled people).
The violation comes in the form of a notification email and the deletion of the Q/A and costs you 10 points.

Review the "Community Guidelines." They are to the left of the answer box when you answer a question. You can turn someone in clicking the flag under the question or the answer. When you do, you have to justify the violation. There's a "drop-down" screen that you select from. My biggest turn off is the racial slurs or grossly sexually indecent questions.

A violation is a reprimand issued by yahoo for those who go against the "community guidelines". These are simple rules that you can familiarize yourself with by following the "community guidlines" link at the bottom of the page.

A violation is when Yahoo feels you have violated their rules and they and they deduct points from your answer score and can violate you from Yahoo for good depending on the amount of violations they claim.

I've only had two of them. One was because I was looking for someone in particular and put in his name. Yahoo didn't like that and they deleted it. The other was late last month when I wished everyone a Happy New Year. Since that wasn't a "question" it got deleted too. Nothing happens to you, it's more like a "warning".

You can be reported by other people or YA can see the question or answer and get you that way, too. The easiest way to get one is to be profane, racist or talk about having sex with children. The last 2 steam me up and I'm pretty laid back.

when the question you posted offends someone they report you and you in turn get a violation. you can also do this to people who post questions that are offencive to you. but you have to write a summary on why you feel it is offencive so it better be a good reason.
