You have to open up the computer (tower) and install a dial up (internal) modem.
You may have trouble finding one since they are rarely used anymore, but if you do find one, i'm sure it won't cost you very much.
Good Luck.

I've never encountered a PC, notebook or desktop, from any vendor, that didn't include a port for dialup - at least not in the last five or six years...
If its a subnotebook - (a category that IBM abandoned as far as I recall) - it might require a port replicator of some sort to add function - but if it has built in ethernet - it should include modem as well...
Worst case - you can buy a PCMCIA (PCcard) modem, or an external modem..
Best bet though is to go to IBM.com and enter serial number of your unit - this should take you to a great web site that lists everything you'd ever want to know (and probably way more) about your PC...

Unfortunately there is no adapter that can plug into the ethernet which will enable dial-up internet. You will need to purchase one of the following depending on what is available and your operating system type(Windows, Linux, etc.):
Option 1: a standard phone modem that must be installed internally (if there is an available PCI or ISA card slot available inside)
Option 2: a USB type modem (if you have an available USB port)
or
Option 3: PCICMA card modem (if its a laptop)
You may also want to check the manufactures support site to verify what is compatible. Always check the box to see if the device can be installed on your system.

No such thing as an adapter. You need to purchase an actual modem. You can buy a 56k modem at Wal-Mart, Best Buy, etc.
As for getting it installed, it's probably tricky for you so find a friend that can do it for little or nothing. Don't take it to bestBuy because they'll charge you an extremely high amount.

If it's a desktop computer, get an internal modem and install it in a PCI slot inside the CPU case.
If it's a laptop, get an external modem that connects to a USB port or to the PCMCIA slot.

You can buy an external modem that can be plugged into your laptop via USB or PCMCIA.
I don't know if ethernet-to-dialup converters exist, but an external modem would be the easiest to find, I'd think.

What you need is to buy yourself a dial up PCM-CIA modem. It's a card that slips into the side of your computer in the PCM slot and the card will have a phone jack built in it. It most likely will come with software.... Wha-la - dial-up - I love technology.
