I think it's the writing style that most colleges and schools follow. For example, in APA style, essays consist of five paragraphs (1 intro, 3 body, and 1 conclusion).

It stands for American Psychological Association, and it's their writing standards. The links in the answer above are great, I've used them throughout college.
