Is it state specific or is it the same no matter where you live? How much does it cost?

Thanks.

It is state specific and so is the cost. Here's what you end up having to pay for: state fees, notary bond and supplies. The state fees are usually around $10 or so the bond will typically run around $50 (by itself) for your 4 year commission (4 year commission is standard) but that varies too. Some states require a $5,000 bond, some require $10,000 (and other amounts), so obviously the higher the bond, the more it costs. There are even some states that don't require a bond at all (New York and New Jersey to name a couple). The stamp is usually around $10 or so (includes your name and commission number, etc.). In some states you can buy a package that includes everything you need and they file your application with the state for you and pay the fee. These packages tend to run between $60 - $120 (again it depends on what the state requires). I know this because I am affiliated with a company that offers these packages in a few states. I'll put the URL in the sources below (you can also find more info about what your state requires by selecting your state then resources from the main navigation). Of course there are a number of other companies out there that offer the same thing. Usually if you do a search for "StateName Notary" you'll find a few of them advertising. So, having said all that, I would say that you should look to spend around $80 or so for a 4 year commission (unless you're lucky and live in a state that doesn't require a bond).

Hope this helps

The qualifications are different from state to state. Check with the city business office to see what they are for the state that you live and plan to work in.
