Good question. I can't imagine why anyone would not consider softball as a sport. I've always enjoyed playing and have been in several leagues over the years both fast and slow pitch. I suppose people that say that either are not sports fans or are too lazy to give it a try. It's a fun sport!!

Of course! If softball isn't a sport, then what is?? It's a game in which success is dependent on the athletic skills of the competitors. That's exactly what a sport is! At least that's my definition of a sport. As for overhand vs. underhand, I wouldn't say either one is harder, they're just completely different. I know that we've seen softball pitchers striking out MLB players on TV, but I'm sure the same would happen with softball hitters and MLB pitchers - in both cases, the hitter is simply not used to it, and will struggle. I'm also strongly disappointed at the removal of softball and baseball from the Olympics. I know they cite lack of international appeal, but that's just wrong. More like lack of European appeal, and I guess the IOC can't take that. Gotta make the Europeans happy, of course.

Softball is a sport. Yet it's a lot easier to hit a softball than a 90 mph fastball. Almost anyone can hit a softball, some of course play better than others, but most can't hit a baseball.

I've never heard anyone say softball isn't a sport. Anyone who ever said that doesn't understand either softball or the meaning of sport.

Well I think that if men are playing it then it shouldn't be considered a very athletic sport but if its women then by all means call it a sport.

Because one is hitting a big roung ball thrown at you underhanded. Softball is generally played by either girls or 30 somethings in recreational leagues who is trying to relive their high school baseball days any way they can. Because of all of this they think less of the sport than it deserves or warranted.

My theory is the same people who look down on softball are the same people who think a sit-on-one's-a** sport like NASCAR is any type of athletic endeavor. LOL

Besides, have these people seen fast pitch softball that is played in the colleges?

many reasons...wether it be because of the underhand pitch, girls playing it, or the fact that beer-gut 40 yr old men can do it, people are ignorant...

i personally look at it as a more technical way of playing baseball. directional hitting, bunting, and things like that are more important than in baseball today. baseball today seems to be all about how hard and far a ball is hit or how hard it's being thrown...

if your refering to the Olympics decision to drop it, that is mainly to spite mlb for not sending its players to the olympics. I think outside of the USA the perception is that softball is baseball for girls, which is a fallacy. Softball has become really popular in other countries and its a fun game to play. Its cheaper than baseball.
