1. Make certain you have some cash secreted some place in your car in addition to debit/credit cards. A few years ago I started out to drive from DC to Atlanta and had my wallet stolen in a McDonald's....everything was in my wallet. In this age of technology, I couldn't cash a check, didn't have my wallet, and had no cash - had to turn around and drive back home
2. Stop for gas; food ONLY at well trafficked places. Lock your car and do not strike up conversations with strangers. You never know when some predator may be listening or BE that stranger
3. When exiting or entering your car, do not do so if folk are lurking about.
4. Have a roadside emergency kit in your trunk - flares, orange triangle signs; etc
5. Take a cell with portable charger
6. Make reservations ahead of time at a motel [well known chain] for any overnight stops [hope you make at least, preferably two stops] Doing so eliminates you driving around looking for a place and having to ask people.
Get enough sleep/rest for each driving leg of our trip.
7. Pick a friend and stay in touch with them via cell so someone will always have a good idea where you are at any given point of your trip.
8. Stop for NO ONE - if a police car signals you - pull over to the shoulder - keep your door locked - If you are signaled to pull over on a dark road, street with little or no traffic, do not do so - call 911, tell them you are being signaled and you will go to the nearest gas station/7-11 to adequately respond to the policeman
10. Get your car fully serviced and road-worthy checked before leaving. No sense beggin' for a break down!
In other words BE SAFE and do not feel embarassed by being suspicious..........you CAN enjoy your trip and I hope you do :-)

I used to do a lot of driving alone when my husband was in the military. Make sure you stop at brand name places to go to the bathroom, like a big, lighted brand name gas station with a food store and lots of people, or a McDonald's, etc. I usually avoid rest areas when I am traveling alone. The only time I go to rest areas is when I know the place and I know there is a guard there.
I usually fill up my car at half a tank. Don't want to get into an area where you are low on gas and can't fill up.
Of course, make sure you have your oil and filter changed before you leave. If you have ANY mechanical problems, or think you might, get them taken care of before the trip.
Take along water and snacks in case you get stranded.
Don't, repeat, DON"T go on a road trip alone without a cell phone and car charger.
Hope you enjoy your trip.

Here's a little check list:
• Well maintained car (fluids/brakes/tires/etc)
• Spare tire / tools / coolant / oil
• Flares
• Water / Food
• Blanket
• Pepper spray
• Cell Phone
• Maps & phone numbers to Roadside Assistance
Like they say in the boyscouts, be prepared! Use common sense and stay alert and you'll get there just fine!

Make sure you have a cell phone, I heard that even if you have a cell that is cut off as long as its charged that 911 still works? If you are getting pulled over it is legal to keep going and call the 911 operator to check if it is a legit policeofficer. Do not use rest area bathrooms, don't pull over to help anyone sounds rude but...
And brush up on your self defense techniques.

if you get stopped by a cop on your way make sure you pull into a well lit area before succombing to his demand for u to stop. Also do not stop at any rest stops that are not lit and have police or 24 hour security. And what ever you do......pay attention to your surroundings!!
