Are you looking for names of people born in the 1950s? Or people that would be children, teenagers, young adults or middle-aged? Knowing that will help greatly in choosing an appropriate name for that time period.

For example, if the character was born in 1945, the name "Keith" was listed as the 108th most popular name given to male babies born that year. So if you're looking for the character to be between 5 and 15 in the story, that name would probably work. But if you want the character to be, say, between 35 and 45, "Keith" would be a highly unusual name, since it was not among the top 500 names given to males born in the year 1915.

Hope this helps. With the first link below you can look up the most popular baby names in America for years after 1879. Also, the second link can be used to look up name meanings to see if they fit with your character. There is also a random name generator on that page which often helps me when I'm stuck!

Here is one place I found that has a list of popular names from the 1950s.

Looking at the list provided at the url above, I think that the name Jack would be great name for a character that is a joker or jokester type (Just like Jack Nickolson.)

Other name that might work is Ronald with Ronnie for short. (Connection to Ronald McDonald.) Edward also has a lot of nicknames, including Eddie.

As for girl names, I think that Mary, Donna, Betty, Shirley, Margaret, and Linda would be some great names to consider.

And lastly, you may want to take a look at some of the songs that were popular during that time. Often the songs of the 1950's have names in them--which resulted in a lot of babies being given those names.
