I have the opportunity to enroll my child in French Immersion school here in Canada. I konw the obvious benefits of it in respect to her future career choices... but what are the benefits at this time - in elementary school?
My biggest feelings towards FI vs Public school are; 1) The kids at the public school are in our community. She'll be bused to FI and may not have as many play date opportunities during the week (I don't drive). 2) I'm afraid that the diversity of her classmates race and culture wise will be limited. I grew up in a very multicultural area and school, and have formed attitudes and feelings about respect and compassion that I feel I wouldn't have if I had gone to a very secular school. I think that it would mostly be white people who want their kids to have french as a second language, as most other kids in my city already have a second language that they speak and can rely on. 3) My daughter has made friends within her school, we know the teachers.

Ran out of space up there!
This is a very big decision to me...
Hopefully I'll hear from people who have been there, and if you haven't, I'd still like to hear what you think.
Thanks for all your answers!

I have not attended FI myself, but from what I have seen of my cousins who did...here is my take on the topic. If your child is going to attend a French university and work in a French job then it is great...but if you learn in French when you are young then go to an English university it is usually a learning shock (grammar and syntax is different, etc.) My cousins were glad to learn French but struggled when they went to English university and worked in English jobs where training and paperwork were in English. If you're going to go with FI, make sure that you also focus on English skills at home.

French Immersion Pros And Cons

Pros-you can learn a second language which is always handy, its private so u get a better education (most times), halos the child will not be badly influenced and can make nice friends

cons-cost money, the child may have to adapt more when coming out of private schools because they weren't used to working with horrible people that are mean and a bad influence. The child also may not be able to make newer friends at this school.

I would pick whats best for the long run..and give it a few months and if its difficult for them or any other reason, switch to a public school.
