I've been a big fan of Securecast and also McAfee Internet securities...but they are getting too expensive anymore and also their damn softwares take up sooo much of your hard drive and the background programs they run sometimes ties up your memory. I'm asking to find out if there is any other softwares out that is just as good and free to protect from viruses and hackers...I have windows defender (was pre-installed), but I'm not sure what that program does other than removes PUPs or malicious softwares, but does that also include protection from malware, spyware, and viruses? I also need to know about firewalls that are available out there too....Thanks! BTW, I don't want Norton, so don't suggest that please!

I have become a firm believer in online protection. These usually install a small program that takes very little HD space and doesn't slow your computer.

Windows Live One Care is an excellent package that not only provides AV and AS protection, but automatic file backup and online storage. All for justs under $50 per yr.

Earthlink has a new online protection program. You do not have to be a member to get it. The non-member price is $36 per yr.

The very best anti-spyware program that you can get that won't cost the earth ($20) and won't slow your computer down is CounterSpy. It is much more powerful than any free software around.

My own personal picks of free alternatives are:

Avast anti-virus: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
ZoneAlarm firewall: http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp

As for anti-spyware, there's loads of good free options out there, stuff like Windows Defender, Ad-Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy.
