Successfully transferred old cassette recordings on to my PC through Musicmatch but they aren't any editing options which will let me get rid of backround hiss and noise. Anyone know of a good and simple software which will help me do this? Many thanks...

I have used ‘Magix Audio Cleaning Lab’ and ‘Audacity’ – Audacity is particularly popular since it is free!
You can also download a free PDF version of the step-by–step guide from the download page mentioned above, the guide is complete with diagrams and screen-shots.
The latter part of the guide talks about editting the sound, but does not go into detail, sorry...still, you are half-way there so I am sure you can work out how to use Audacity.

Saw on Price is right one morning, a machine that can copy to CD from 45, cassettes and 8 tracks--was like $150 for the device?

Audacity was designed pretty much with this situation in mind, and it's completely free:
