It is a good idea if you are prepared to invest in some quality equipment.
I used to run a car wash business in my village and could make some good money.
Here are some tips
1) Dont charge too much, check the going rates in the area.
2) Think of ways of getting regular work - I used to give people the option of a 'contract' where as they filled in my contract paperwork with a wekly, fortnightly or monthly option.
3) turn up rain or shine - it may sound silly washing a car in the winter or when the weather if iffy, but a clean car that is rained on will look much better than a wet, dirty car
4) Dont take on too much work - if you are very busy and some one asks for a wash, dont take it, explain that you cant do it today as your fully booked and take an appointment for another time - if you dont turn up then you wont be asked again
5) Look for a row of dirty cars and set about starting when people will be about.
6) Think about working on a Sunday - people clean their cars on a sunday, why not give them extra time to do something they really want to do not doing something they see as a chore!
I had a big customer base (over 90 regular customers in a 200 house village plus other one offs) and it made me good money for over 9 years until i moved.

You may have a lot of business, but you may not make a lot of money, which is the whole point in the first place. It's a very cut-throat down to the last penny business. Most places around where I live change your oil and clean your vehicle inside and out for $35. So even if you go lower price than the competition and get more business, you may not have a very good profit margin. You may do better to think about a mobil car wash and detail business.

How many other car wash businesses are based within say, a 5 mile radius, how busy are they, and what service do they offer.
Where I live, there are dozens of them, and i have tried several, but I now keep going back to the same one, and queue for the service, because the service is second to none; offering a basic carwash service that others can offer might not make your business successful, but building it into a service that people are happy to queue for, then you would make it.

Do a lot of people have cars? (or do they use public transport)
Are there any other car washes? - If no it may sound good but why aren't there any others? Make sure you check out the competition and market your car wash well.
P.S Think of something no other car wash does, which you could offer and Good Luck!!

Of course, where there's muck, there's brass as the old saying goes.
There will always be work for people who do what other people aren't prepared to do. I'm 33 and I've hand washed my car 4 times.
