Yeah I agree. The reason most kids are in gangs is because their families may not be paying attention to them at home or the kids feel that no one cares about them and they think that being in a gang will give them the family life they want but for some reason don't have at home. Also runaways join gangs as well in order to survive on the streets. I think we have to make the public aware that they need to be more open with their children and provide more youth programs after school that kids can go to so they don't turn to gangs.

Well, the curfew idea was given at one point, to the best of my memory. However, some stood up saying that it was a violation of personal rights. And besides, I (a teen myself) don't really want to be arrested just because I was late walking home from a friend's house. I personally think that maybe tough love is the best way to get it to cut it out. Treat these kids like adults, no bail, and adult prison. The problem, in my opinion is that the law exempts children for the sake of them being "children". Punishments are not breaks, they are supposed to teach criminals what it is that they did wrong. What's worse is that juvenile detention centers are like the cartoon network of the prison. It's for kids, and that's what makes kids not fear punishment. So, I say don't go easy on them. Punish them like the criminal scum they are.

I think it also has a lot to do with the quality of our schools. School hours are completely out of sync with parents' work schedules. Many start early in the morning and end before parents get home from work. Many teens and children are left alone in the hours between school and parents' arrival without attention, discipline, or anything to do. Schools are cutting after school programs that typically keep these kids active and out of gangs.
Moreover, there needs to be more support at home. If children's home environments are poor or have indifferent and abusive families, they are more likely to seek peer groups (or gangs) as a replacement. This is why many former gang members report that they felt like their gang was their family or their true home. Community violence or constant exposure to violence can increase gang numbers. Since parents are less likely to punish their children these days, this has become a real problem. Permissive parenting permits children to behave poorly without REAL, tangible consequences.
Any number of these can contribute to the prevalence of gangs.

They receive no love at home which is no excuse. If there were more things for them to be involved in it might stop some gangs from being on the streets,A lot of it is boredom with nothing to do.Iknow its no excuse. If more people gave kids a chance like getting involved and setting in place things for them to do maybe there would not be so much vanadalism and violence.A lot of these kids are outcasts. Sorry I am clutching at straws for solutions here.

I hate gangsters.

They think they're so smart, but they really aren't.
