In one of Arthur Conan Doyle's stories, Sherlock Holmes is engaged to be married, in order to gain more information for his case. But I cannot find out which story this is. Does anyone know the title?

That was The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton. Holmes disguises himself and goes out to Hampstead, where he becomes a plumber and endears himself to Milverton's housemaid, even managing to become her fiancé.

The one woman Holmes was impressed with was Irene Adler. The story was A Scandal in Bohemia. (But he didnt pretend to be engaged to her -- I'll see if I can find more info.)

OK - Wikipedia had the info you wanted: the story was entitled: "The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton"

Yeah, he was engaged to a woman named Barratt (think about it).
