My new hamster has managed to escape its brand new, so called secure cage, jump off a three foot high table and is now somewhere in my house. I think maybe hes in the kitchen. Any ideas on how to catch him asap hes been out all day.

I lost my hamsters twice(cage malfunction), but they always turned up on their own after I spent hours looking all over the house for them. One of them even crawled on my little brothers head while he was sleeping and tried to get in his mouth. My advice is to just stop looking thats usually when you'll see them behind a door or run across the floor. I personally tried the food thing and it never worked. It's very important that you do find them or else they might start chewing on wires and ruin anything electronic!!

hamsters cannot jump. If he has fallen 3 foot, he will be badly injured and probably gone to hide while he dies slowly. He will have internal injuries as well as broken bones. Cages are secure. The only time he could escape is when you didn't put it together properly or left the door open. Try leaving the cage on the kitchen floor overnight and home he isn't so badly injured that he can drag himself to his cage. Then get him straight to the vet. If all is well, learn to fasten the cage properly, or if you still insist that you are not at fault, go out and buy a better cage.Do not allow the hamster ever to be in a position where it can fall from a 3 foot high surface.

I had a hamster, a few years ago, that escaped from her cage with 4 babies and my sister got up in the morning to see a line of wee fluffy rodents scurrying across the floor. It was quite funny, murder to catch them though as the babies weren't tame yet.

If you can, put the cage on the floor with the door open. If the door is high off the floor and the cage has ladders then remove one from the cage and put it from the floor up so the hamster can climb up.

If this isn't possible then lay some of his bedding and food in a safe spot on the floor and just watch for him.

He will head for somewhere warm, so don't switch on your cooker without checking behind and underneath first. Try to keep your house warm so he does go into hibernation.

Finally don't worry, I had one missing for 3 days, they are resilient and probably isn't any worse for wear after his fall. He will find food as hamsters are resilient.

Have had loads of hamsters in my time. One in particular cost me a fortune in cages - if he didn't chew through it and escape that way, he would find a way to open the door. Put bulldog clips on it and everything and still the pesky little critter could escape - Houdini, he was.
Close all doors, cage on floor and favourite food out. He may just get back in for a midnight feast and fall asleep in some cosy bedding in the cage. Good luck - before he wrecks the house. Mine ate a big hole in the middle of the lounge carpet!!

My hamster did the same bloody thing the other night and I could not believe that he had survived the fall with no broken/fractured limbs. I was quite lucky though, he knew my scent by then so he came when I put a piece of his favourite treat on the floor and called him. You can try putting a few treats on the floor and waiting out of sight and as soon as you see him, try and grab him. Although be careful, scare him too much and he may go off you you or worse. Or, place his cage, with the top off on the floor and hope the smell of home entices him. Good luck! x

Check under the stove. That is where mine always loved hiding. I would recommend putting his cage on the floor with some food in it and making sure that there wasn't any food left out around the house and he'll come home eventually. Check for droppings to see where he's been and try catching him there.

Good luck!

chop up some fresh veg really small and make a trail, put the cage on the floor in the middle of the room and lead the trail to it. Hopefully when all is quiet it will come out, but sadly by now it could be in the walls or under the floor.
good luck

Set up a trap!!! Get an empty coffee can, say, and fill it(the bottom only!) with soft bedding, and treats.Make small stairs out of books up to it, covered in treats. It'll fall in, and stay comfy and fed! Put it in a room with an open door with no noise, somewhere that he might be. Check on it at night, when he's active! Good luck! P.S. They sleep during the day

hi, you should do this- you need to close all the doors at night, then in the middle of each floor put some food. the room the hamster is in will be the only room where the food has been touched. so, once you know which room he is in, it becomes a lot easier!
also, i lost mine once, so did a friend of mine and the odd thing is, they BOTH turned up in a shoe. they seem to LOVE hiding in shoes. check in all the shoes...hope you find him, and dont worry, but dont forget to leave small water bowl out too.

Go and buy a Have-A-Heart rat trap.. Put some of his food in it and place it near where you think he is. The trap is humane and the hamster will not be harmed by it.

Also, you may want to lay down sheets of alumium foil before you go to bed and in the morning, if he has wondered around, you'll see his little paw prints on the aluminum foil and you can see where he might be.
