Lead-free solder has been required for domestic water pipes for over twenty years now. It is still possible to get 50 - 50 solder (50% lead) for use on other than domestic water systems.

Yes, lead solder is used widely. It is not pure lead, however. It is usually alloyed with tin. It can be found in rigid copper water supply systems, and new fixtures,(valves, spray heads, and others) are often assembled using a soldering process. Older cast - iron waste drain systems still use oakum and lead wool caulked joints.

The term is SOLDER and yes especially if repairs are to be made to old cast pipe systems.
