If he is in a middle eastern country, do not listen to anyone telling you to send anything even mildly porographic, he will get in major trouble for it! I have a brother that spent time in Iraq, and that's the deal. They will open and check his mail. Usually, wherever he is based out of locally will have any guidelines about what items are banned.
I liked the idea someone had of sending him a video of family and places he might miss, if you can take it somewhere and put it on DVD, that would probably be better. It's smaller, and a lot of people have computers he could watch it on, who knows if he has a VHS machine available to him. If you can't do it on your home computer, chances are you know someone who can, or there is a place in the area that can make the transfer for relatively cheap.
You could probably include some small comfort items. I know we sent my brother tons of baby wipes while he was there. He was in the desert, and he used them to wipe at the sand he was constantly covered with. That was probably his favorite thing we sent him, so you could be suprised how much he'll appreciate the small things.

I second Meeno's idea. A locket might be just the thing if regulations will let him wear it.
The idea of a watch isn't bad either, depending on the sort of work he is doing.
Failing those ideas, perhaps a gift package containing a small photo in metal frame, biscuits, perhaps a teeny assortment of treats and a card with note saying how you are counting the days until he returns.

Basically what I'm doing is that I'm giving him a memory box with some stuff I put together for him. I also made him a really nice card with a heartfelt poem that I wrote. I made him a poem book with pictures I have taken as well. : } I'm doing all this stuff because Valentine's is our first anniversary. ♥
Well, I found this great website that has a lot of ideas that people sent in. A lot of great ideas... cheap, creative, sweet. So if you need ideas, here ya go:

It helped me come up with some ideas and stuff.
Check it out!

I agree with Cheryl G. The most important thing when you're away is to feel close to your loved ones ( I know that sounds strange)! Send pictures and a dvd if you can! Also if he likes sweets, send some, they are always greatly received when you're on tour.

I think sending him a video is an excellent idea....you could either send him a sexy one of you or one of all his family and friends but I'm sure he'd prefer a sexy one of you in all your glory!!!!

How about recording a video for him and getting it put on a dvd.
I'll leave it up to you what you record though.
