what are the essential things you need to become self employed and how long does it take to set up.

i have a few idea's of what i want to do. i've furniture shop work in the past and liked it, so that is one idea. i've also sold clothes, cd's and book's, that another idea.

there are a few questions i need to ask

1. how much money is required to set up a business
2, is it criticial that you have skills and experience
3. how do you draw up a business plan
4. where do you find your market
5. how do you advertise your business and products
6. do people use private seller
7. where do you find a wholesaler and the products
8. how do you bet the competition

Gee, how long have you got? Its not like that list of questions has any short or easy answers. You'll need to fgure out what kind of business you want to start before you can answer any of them. As for #8, there are entire sections of the bookstore devoted to this subject.

1. Plan on 6 months of operating expenses and supporting yourself for beginning operating capital.
2. Yes.
3. Google 'business plans', you will find many examples. They may even help you structure your business. There is also software for writing business plans.
4. Depends on the type of business. Mine is business to business sales, you sound like you are going for business to private person sales.
5. In the areas of most likely traffic for your target audience.
6. You can use sales representatives if you think that would be your best avenue.
7. Searching out competitve quotes from wholesalers and what type of added value you will put into your products.
8. I suggest reading Rule Makers, Rule Breakers by the Gardner brothers (fool.com) and looking at it from the perspective of the business owner and not the investor.
a. Is it an emerging product,
b. Is it the first in the market?
c. what kind of patent/trademark/copyright protection is there?
d. visionary management v. inept competitors
e. maintaining your busines momentum
f. good management and smart investors
