There are a lot of "if's, when's & where's" to your question, but here's an idea.

My wife has a 4 chair salon in a suburb of Atlanta. It's not in a strip and depends mainly on repeat customers, referrals and direct marketing (mailouts, retail shows, etc.). It is not a $8.99 hair cut 'joint'...which you may need to start at to get some experience.

My youngest daughter (23) started there as a shampoo assistant (several years ago) and is now licensed as a stylist, and is in her second year. She made right at $25,000 for herself last year. At her present rate of growth, which the salon's business coach says she is right where she should be, she has a potential of a solid $60 -75,000 a year income for herself...which I'd have to say to answer your question, is good money. Unfortunately, it's better than teachers, our armed forces, firemen or policemen make.

Now, she works hard and smart and she has the talent to see what the customer wants to look like...and to be able to see what the customer has the potential to really look like and what look works best for them. If you don't have the talent, then you'll never be anything more than a barber, and you'll never be happy with your income. She also attends not only hair shows, but gets in every possible class offered by the different product lines the salon carries...color, perms, cutting, etc.
