I think that their abilities as a live act are grossly overstated and actually think that their best studio work is better than any live recording of them. Regardless, they are great. Their stuff is so expensive though, but it's a lot of music. I just ordered the deal on the complete Dick's Picks set in August and I'm still wading through.

I'm an old-time fan(first of 65 shows, Englishtown, NJ 1972)-
The music wasn't for everybody, but it was a unique blend of some great talent with varous roots- Jerry with his folk and bluegrass(Old and In the Way got me started on a 5-sting banjo), Pigpen, of course, brought the blues to the table. Bob, well, it's always been hard to say-but within the personality cults of the Dead, I definitely lean towards Phil- his classical and avant-garde background-and sheer musicianship-he took the bass guitar from being another 'rhythm-keeper' for the band to being its own part of the mix.
Being a Deadhead-at least on a part-time basis-had its moments. When I was in the Navy, I was stationed onboard a nuclear submarine out of New London, Ct. I used to get pulled over and searched by the Marines(the Navy used to use them as MP's) since I had a bumper sticker that read "I Brake For Hallucinations".....

The best band ever. They made their way by never playing a song the same way twice and always reaching for something more. Granted at times there was some sloppy playing but that always happens with improvised music. For many years they were the only jam band along with King Crimson. They allowed people to tape their shows and even set up places for those of us who wanted to be able to keep the music with us always. They were a band beyond discription. They were great musicians and songwriters.

I grew up on them. They rock! The only time I have ever seen my dad cry was the day Jerry died. RIP.
The dead is a thing that will live on forever so long as there are Dead Heads passin it along to there children.

Grate old band. I like um somewhat, my brothers loved em. I always liked metal more than 'folk-rock' though.

love them, miss them. when jerry died it was like i lost a member of my close family. i'll never forget where i was when i heard the news- in my garden in arcata, ca. couldn't believe it was true. to die in rehab. how sad. they will always be a part of my life, i play them for my 3 year old son all the time. its really cute to see him dancing around to sugar magnolia or box of rain. jerry lives through all those who remember and love him. boo to all those who are 'grateful' jerry is gone! shame on you!

Best band of the '60's by far! The tunes play as well now as they did way back when. I never get tired of hearing them.

I don't get why people think they're great musicians. All I hear is very sloppy playing. Someone told me you have to be stoned to appreciate it. I suppose that's true.
