i have read all your answers that you have got i worked as a ford teck for two years and all the people that had the ford ranger all said one thing gas mileage for some reason the ford ranger got bad gas mileage and ford had nothing to say for it the ford ranger was a good all around good truck but was cheaply made. went to work for GM the s10 truck was a good truck as well the 4.8 motor got way better fuel economy and more power i bot a new Colorado in 04 with the i5 motor and the passed the ranger by fare so if looking for a good truck get a Colorado and you will not be disappointed i traded the truck just about a three week ago and had good resale two. good luck but give a Chevy a try.

I've driven both as our company trucks are Rangers and I owned an '00 S-10 for 7 years until I recently bought a new Colorado. I liked the S-10 better as it has more power. The V-6 in the Ranger is a slug and has about as much power as the S-10 4 cyl, but gets worse mileage. Handling and comfort are about the same, but the S-10 has more comfotable seats. Both seem to be pretty reliable. I actually like the Colorado better than both of these as it's a bit bigger and has much better handling, comfort, and power. If your budget can handle it, go for a Colorado, otherwise I'd recommend the S-10 over the Ranger. Also, don't forget to consider the nearly identical GMC Sonoma or Isuzu Hombre.

Ford Ranger.
Parts are much cheaper and the vehicle when maintained, is much more reliable than the Chevy S10.
Gas mileage is a lot better too.
My son still drives a 99 Ranger with 200,000 miles on it and it just keeps going.
Over the years I have never had any problems with my Rangers.
Since 1993 I have leased 8 of them.
Great on gas and cheap on insurance.

You know what, buy one of each, he he. They are both great running trucks. My grandpa had a Ford Ranger and that thing ran forever, think it was an '88. Now we have an S10 in our garage, its been good so far. Whichever you decide, I warn you, make sure it has a V6. anything smaller is simply not meant for hauling stuff of any sort. Both Manual and automatic, it doesn't matter as long as you know how to drive it.

First, Chevrolet has not made the S10 for several years. They are now called Colorado/Canyon for GMC. Ford is the top seller, but it is a less expensive truck. All small trucks I've ever seen, including Toyota, Nissa, Mazda, end up sounding like a rattle trap if driven the least bit rough. They just don't take abuse well.
With that said, everyone I've known that drives a Ranger, loves it.

I've known people that have owned Chevy S10s & purchased them in the 80s & the trucks are still going on a daily basis without more than the expected amount of repairs.
One family friend has one with over 250,000 miles on it & drives it on a daily basis.
Just my 2 cents.

S10 by far. If anything goes wrong with it...you have parts for days. Also, Ford has a serious problem of discontinuing major parts that your truck may need.

That's simple the Chevy. The only reason that Ford outsells Chevy is because the Ford is cheaper. Why is it cheaper?? Because like all Fords it is not built very well and a lot of cheap parts are used to build it.
