Heya - there are PLENTY of places to shop. If you are pretty new to London and feel the need to shop, you can benefit from my countless credit card fuelled forays, often started by my partner in crime.
I've written a beginners guide to shopping in London using the underground stations (tube stops) as the starting point. It covers areas north, west, east and central including Camden, Shoreditch, Bond Street and Portobello Road. Have a look and let me know how you get on.
It's on the Virtual Tourist site here (takes up too much space on this Yahoo page) http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/tt/89e15/#TL
...a snippet.... "Old Street (Northern Line). This will be your gateway to the Shoreditch area of East London. We like it here - very funky, edgy yet with plenty of decent bars, eateries and happy humans to make the wander wonderful. You'll most likely pick up clothes by tripped out designers, real bleeding edge fashion, quirky or retro furniture, art and, on market day, fake everything. Look around Hoxton Square (original home to Acid Jazz records & the seminal Drum n’ Bass basement, Blue Note), Curtain Road and then wander over to Brick Lane and the Old Truman Brewery, passing the Spitalfields covered market and the weekend adventure that is Petticoat Lane. While you’re on Brick Lane, enjoy a Bengali curry or buy one of the best beigels in town for 20p."

Oxford Street, Bond Street, Regent Street. That entire area is a shopping Mecca. Knightsbridge is nice too and so is Portobello market and Camden market.

Kensington Market, a little out of the centre but worth a visit.
Covent Garden and Sloan Square are good places too.

the words London & inexpensive do no longer belong together. the suited place for paying for is the west end, oxford street and regent street. in case you bypass to the top of oxford street close to marble arch, thats the place the extra affordable shops are. camden in NW1 is physically powerful, bypass to the marketplace at camden lock.
