I'm unaware of any public comments by Gates indicating that he would like to be President, and I would bet the job holds absolutely no appeal for him. He has much more flexibility and some semblance of privacy in his current role of chairman of Microsoft and CEO of the Gates Foundation. Moreover, he's probably aware that, as the richest man in the world, he would face incredible conflict-of-interest issues as a politician.

More generally, we ought to be skeptical of the ability of successful businessmen and -women to have the same impact in politics and government. Many of these types of people believe, as whack-a-doodle presidential candidate Ross Perot said in '92, that all you have to do to fix the country's problems is to lift the hood and tinker with the hoses & wires. It ain't that simple. Governmental and political institutions have much more complex constituencies than businesses, which are answerable above all to their shareholders, and the measurement of political success/failure is a lot harder than tracking earnings flows or stock prices as in a private firm. These concerns would apply to Bill Gates as well if he were ever to have any desire for office--but for now he seems a lot wiser about this than other tycoons such as Perot or Silvio Berlusconi, the former Italian prime minister.
