on my acrylic tank eclipse system, i get a little spot of mold if i dont clean the red algae off above the water line. I remove the top plastic frame and gently scrub it off with an acrylic safe aquarium sponge. I havent had this problem with glass tanks, i think it is because the caulk on the frame keeps the moisture out of the frame, preventing the buildup of algae which eventually molds if it is not removed. it hasn't killed any of my fish (over a year) and my water levels are fine ammonia 0 nitrites 0 and nitrates kept under 20 ppm... Just scrub it off during regular tank maintainence.
