I didnt know her dad, and I know her because she works on another shift. I lost my dad a year ago and a couple of people at work were very kind to me. I just would like to re pay and in some way let her know I understand. Should I send her a check for $20?

When my father-in-law passed away from a heart attack it was around the end of the month, so the SSI check my mother-in-law needed to live off of was held and recalculated. So many people sent lovely flowers, plants and/or cards. She said all she could do was look around and think of all the money spent on them when she could have used that to live on until her check came. No one thought to ask her, and as much as she appreciated their kindness and generosity it just seemed a terrrible waste to her. If this girl lived with her father and supported her living expenses I would ask, if not her a friend of hers, if she'd rather have the money instead, you'd be surprised how much help a few dollars are to some people at this time. Our bowling association use to take up money for flowers when a member lost a member of their immediate family, now the money is given to the bowling member in a card signed by the leagues. Cancer related deaths have such high medical bills needing to be paid or have already drained the family of income, I hope more people read this and give cash donations instead of flowers.

When I lost my husband, yeah several people gave me money, but it didn't mean as much as the thoughtful gestures. The $20 can be used to buy a lifetimes worth of weekly masses in the deceased name, so you would send her a mass card which would state this. Also many times the deceased may have been involved with hobbies or a cause when he was alive, so instead of flowers or cash they may ask for a donation sent to a certain place or charity. Notice would be sent to her saying that you placed a donation in the deceased name. I look at it like you can't put money on someones life, so turn it into something meaningful and good.

Why don't you donate to a local charity in his memory. Just a thought!!

If you don't know her, then it's better to send a sympathy card.
