I am from a different country to my husband (he is English, I am Czech). We have been married for over 7 years now and I sometimes feel like it is always me who has to make the effort or compromise. He will never understand my favourite books and I feel left out when he talks about the cartoons he watched as a child as they mean nothing to me. But at the same time we are happy and talk about the stuff we experienced together. At the end of the day it is about what you really want and your personalities. But if your family or friends would not accept your partner because of their background it would put a huge pressure on your relationship and it probably wouldn't work out.

Yeah, he was a rich kid and his mother HATED me. Everything else was fine (well, other than that he turned out to be a tosser, but that wasn't related to class/background).
Looking back she was a pathetic, unhappy woman and I feel sorry for her. At the time I had figurative scars on my tongue from having to bite it so often and would have given a lot to let rip and tell her exactly what I thought of her snide little put-downs and constant power games. The main thing that stopped me was the knowledge that she'd seize on something like that as proof that she'd been right about me all along and completely avoid the issue of whether what I was saying was justified.
I occasionally wonder who he's seeing now and whether he'll ever be able to find anyone good enough for her. Because he wasn't the sort of person who'd have been able to land himself a trust fund princess, or have wanted one even if he could. There's plenty more ordinary girls like me in her future... he he he...

I've dated some punk/skater type guys. That did not go over well with my parents who are very traditional Filipino.
