Well this is a 2 part answer from me.
1. Children used to have to work in horrible conditions up to 18 hours a day, 7 days a week. They were abused and injured(with no insurance) and exploited. Laws were passed that made it illegal to do this to them and these are the laws in place. The laws PROTECT YOU from unethical unlawful employers who just want to hurt you and do not care about you. There are more of them than you think. Unfortunately because you are young, they think you are easy prey.
2. You CAN work in retail and many other places if you are 14. You get a work permit slip from your school counselor (or any school's counselor).

It's to protect you, that's why! People out there would be having children working all kinds of hours without hardly any pay if the law didn't protect you! We've already been there and that's why the laws are in place. Sometimes you just have to get older to understand why things are the way they are! Babysit, organize garages, pet sit/walk, do odd jobs, there are lots of ways for you to make money if you're willing to really sit down and think about it! Like everyone is saying, once you start working, it's a long, long, long time before you get to quit, so enjoy being free, you won't be much longer!!!

We all want to do a lot of things that the law doesn't allow. There are many reasons for these laws. However, you CAN work at the age of 14... you can babysit, mow lawns, fix bikes, deliver newspapers, etc. I had a job at 14 working at the local tourist trap during the summers and on weekends scooping ice cream. A lot of places like that will be willing to give you a shot since you'll work for cheap.

Because, unfortunately, and though you don't believe it now, you're not old enough or mature enough to make that kind of decision right now. It's actually a law to protect you, not just to piss you off. I worked when I was 14, I just went around the law some. You should be focused on school, but if your grades are good why don't you try babysitting, selling things on Ebay, starting a blog that pays - things of that nature that you can do under the table and not have to report your age.

Children we treated as adults for most of... all of human history.
I'm very glad that you want to work, and become a responsible person! In some states, you can work on a limited basis.
The problem was, and I will refer only to US history, that children were being exploited at least as much as adults. In the begining of the 20th Century, there were many laws established to protect the people of this land, and the children were included. The right to an education for all children is a novel concept in history. Traditionally, children even in our country were educated for only a few weeks a year. The most rural and poor areas were (and still are, if you ask me) taught only the bare essentials of life, whereas wealthier areas give their children a much more worldly view of life and the world around them.
Before that, education was only for the wealthy. Rich people did not need the children to tend the animals, or make the textiles, or fetch water from the river. Rich people could pay for tutors. Governments had no interest in educating children.
Today, we are blessed with the foundations of our great nation, that all "men" are created equal...
that all children should receive a FREE education...
that children should be free to concentrate on it for the improvement of themselves, their families, and all of society.
The problem is, in allowing children to never work, they are unprepared for the real world.
At 29 years old, I have a great work ethic, and still feel unprepared for the work world.
There is no easy transition nowadays...
if we sent children to work two days a week for 52 weeks a year, they might appreciate the real world, they might understand their parents, lose their attitude problems, and avoid drug use, etc.
They might realize why they are learning geometry if their mentors are artists or engineers.
They might care about biology if they help out at the front desk of a medical office, even just handing out reading materials, and starting to appreciate the lifesaving work that simple blood tests can do!
But no, we send you all to school, only to school, and leave out all of the experiences that would make your 12 years in school relevant and exciting.
Good luck to you, and to all your peers.

You can babysit, dogwalk, do errands & chores for people, deliver newspapers......... there's lots you can do.
The law was made years ago to stop people forcing children to work 15, 16 hours a day every day as the adult employment laws did not include children. It was also brought in to limit the hours a child can work so they can go to school, have time to play and sleep and stuff like that

Read up on the old labor conditions. Without those laws you would have been in a factory at age 5 or 6 at the oldest. I am sorry so many of you young people are not learning the why and where fores of our country.

The Child Labor Laws are there for YOUR protection. Until they were in place, it was common for children younger than you to work in sweat shops and earn pennies a day. Would you like to go back to that? I didn't think so. Besides, there are always exceptions to laws. Why not check into it and find out if there is a way for you to work for relatives.
