If you all are anything like me then you had no idea what was in the briefcase in Pulp Fiction. So, through a friend of a friend of a friend who had a two hour conversation with Quentin Tarantino himself, I now know, and I thought I would pass along the information because it makes the movie even 100 times better than it already is.
Remember the first time you were introduced to Marsellus Wallace. The first shot of him was of the back of his head, complete with band-aid. Then, remember the combination of the lock on the briefcase was 666. Then, remember that whenever anyone opened the briefcase, it glowed, and they were in amazement at how beautiful it was; they were speechless. Now, bring in some Bible knowledge, and remember that when the devil takes your soul, he takes it from the back of your head.
Yep, you guessed it. What is the most beautiful thing about a person: his soul. Marsellus Wallace had sold his soul to the devil, and was trying to buy it back. The three kids in the beginning of the movie were the devil's helpers. And remember that when the kid at the end came out of the bathroom with a "hand cannon," Jules and Vincent were not harmed by the bullets. "God came down and stopped the bullets" because they were saving a soul. It was divine intervention.

It's a flashlight. :)
On the special edition of the Pulp Fiction DVD, there is a running "video commentary" (a la Pop Up Video from VH1 in the 90s). All of these theories (gold, soul, stuff from other movies) are explored. The "official" answer is -- who knows, who cares -- it's a McGuffin (google that-- it was Hitchcock's term for an item that everyone wants in a movie but the viewer doesn't know why everyone wants it, and it doesn't matter, we just care about it because everyone does). The "soul" thing was developed by Q's fans based on the clues in the movie, including the Band-Aid. But, according to the DVD popups, the Band-Aid was not in the original script; it's there because Ving R. had a scratch, or zit, or some other flaw that day, and the production people thought it would be too distracting, so they just put a Band-Aid over it!
"666" just works because M.W. is so evil. The bullet-stopping thing isn't real of course--the "hand cannon" guy was just such a bad shot, so nervous, and not supporting the gun, that he just missd.
Nonetheless, I like the "soul" argument, because it makes the movie slightly more meaningful and coherent.

Good one. Some have speculated that it is the soul of Mr.Wallace because of the band-aid on the back of his neck where it was supposed to have been extracted.I've never found anything to support that so I enjoy the other version. It is the stones from Reservoir Dogs that never were recovered.Since Vince and Vic were brothers, it makes sense that these two films run somewhat parallel.I guess the soul thing is more fun to follow.I also think the 666 combination might support that too.Yeah I like the soul thing!

I asked my son, he saw the movie, I didn't. Answer...It's his soul. He sold his soul so he could live forever. When he found out he wouldn't, he had the ones responsible killed. Hence the scene in the apartment, where Travolta and Jackson should have been shot. That's why Jackson's character can't give the briefcase to the couple robbing the restaurant. It's in the book.

In a radio interview with Howard Stern in late 2003, Quentin Tarantino was asked by a caller the contents of the briefcase, and he answered, "It's whatever the viewer wants it to be."

Nobody knows for sure, but one theory I heard was that it was supposed to be Marcellus Wallace's soul(Travolta and Jackson's boss).

An Oscar.
It is shiny, gold and does not belong to Samuel L Jackson so he can not give it to you.
