Pit Bulls are just like any other animal except certain states want to terminate their breed. You could get bit by any animal. For a while Doberman Pinschers were bad then Rottweilers were bad and so on and so forth. Why ban an animal for a bad rep, ban the people that make them that way. Next it will be your family retreiver or lab being banned for being too vicious.

Yes you do hear a lot about people getting mamed and killed by them and hardly anything about other breeds, but in the same sense you hear about gang violence and how it is always blacks that are out there spewing violence and nothing about the other races that are also doing the same thing. We just like to pick on one stereotype.

In the U.S., pit bulls do account for approximately 50% of serious maimings and about a third of fatal attacks; statistics which are far out of proportion to the breed’s numbers.
It is owners encouraging aggression that should be considered the real culprits. If well socialized they can be the best of dogs.

I would never give up my pit, and I will continue to take in pits since people are always dumping them around here. First, any mixed breed dog that bites someone here is automatically labeled as a pit or pit mix. Most of the time there is no pit in the dog. But, it doesn't matter because one person has the say over what is and is not a pitbull when it comes down to it, and 9 times out of 10 it will be labeled as a pit or pit mix because that gives them an excuse to make a news story. Those that do bite have been abused in one way or another. Either they have been beat or chained away without any human interaction. What people don't realize is that when pit bull fighting was legal, any human aggressive dog was destroyed. People were in the rings with them while they were fighting and the dogs had to be stable enough for someone to grab them after the fight. As far as them "going crazy", it is from all the inbreeding. After so many generations of inbreeding, they inherit the bad genes and eventually those genes will cause the dog to react in different ways. People now want to have something to complain about and something to be able to sue over. If someones ankle biter bites a kid, a simple " I'm sorry" and everything is usually forgiven. Let a big dog, especially one someone thinks is a pit, even scratch someone and they are screaming "it attacked me" Want a couple stories? I found a female pit one day. Young dog, maybe 6 mths old. I picked her up and put her in the car with my kids. About a year later, the kids were playing out front and she was in the back. She jumped the fence and ran around front to play with them. 15 minutes later, animal control and the police are at my door. The story was that my dog jumped the fence and ran on a school bus and attacked the neighbors kids. Animal control came to take my dog, and I asked them to provide me with a police report and medical documentation that anyone was hurt. The issue was dropped immediately. Another story. I have a 5 year old female pit now. A large girl, weighing in at approx 75 lbs at last check. When we first moved in to our new house, the neighbors were ready to get a petition together to make us get rid of her because she is "dangerous". Once they got to know her, and even seen her get attacked by another dog we had taken in (Akita). When my kids tried to break up the fight, my pit rolled on her back and gave up. She will not do anything to harm my kids. Now she is a welcomed addition to the neighborhood. It just goes to show, a dog becomes what the breeder and owner make it.

The main reason is that "pit bull" attacks are so heavily featured on the news when they occur despite the fact that they are relatively rare. Often times, a dog attack is attributed to "pit bulls" even when a different breed was actually the culprit. The media will then sweep the facts under the rug because they are very reluctant to correct a story as loudly as the originally reported it.
The fact is that there are no bad dogs. There are just bad owners. Also, those who say that they are naturally aggressive and killers and whatever else are obviously ignorant. Sure, they were originally bred to fight, but they were not bred to attack humans. A dog that will attack a human in the dog fighting ring would be completely useless to an owner.

Pit Bulls are dangerous, as are Rottweilers and Dobermans. It's not that they are bad animals, but when they attack it can be lethal. It's understandable, but I think banning them goes too far. What they need to do is make the owners of the dogs responsible for their pet's actions.

They were a breed created for the sole purpose of fighting. They have it in their makeup to be rough and vicious. It's not likely that the local golden retriever is going to bite a 4 year old's face off because it got too close to the fence. They shouldn't be banned, but they should be kept well trained. Unfortunately stupid people get them sometimes and don't care for them like they should and they become nasty dogs. It's not the dogs' fault.

Well I believe the pitbull has the most dangerous bite of all breeds (i think that is where their bad rep comes from). I don't agree with getting rid of them though. That species of dog just wants to exist like any other species.
Pitbulls make good guard dogs because their bite shows that their owners mean business :)

Last week I read an article about a Pitbull owner being mauled by his own dog. How many times has you heard this by Godlen Retreivers, Cocker spaniels, or Shitzus? Pittbull give themselves bad reps.

I very much agree with you.
It's called Breedism, and it's real. The same people who assume that every African-American is a criminal based on the actions of a few, are the same type of people who blame the breed of dog for every evil deed done.
Blame the parents, not the animal.

well, it depends on the owner if you ask me. if a person treats their animal badly, all they will know is abuse, and when someone tries to be nice the animal could take it the wrong way and attack. so i agree with you, they shouldn't ban any type of breed, they should ban abusers from buying animals. pff.
