Almost half of the money made in this country is not taxed. If you make less than 30,000 you typically don't pay a dime in taxes, yet the less you make the more you take advantage of the government. A leech feeding off of welfare is what it all boils down to. If a flat tax were instituted a rate of 9.7% across the board would generate as much money as our current tax system.

Total personal income for 2003: 9,157,257,000,000

Yet,

Total Personal Taxable income was: 4,200,198,884
Total Personal Tax Revenue at all rate levels was: 780,309,227
That equates to: 18.6%

So for 2003 a flat tax of 9.3% would have generated the same tax revenue

not a flat tax - but a national sales tax. So that the more you spend - the more you pay. That would hit the wealthier more than the poor - but it would be based on spending - not income.

Obviously, you've never had to scrape by to survive on minimum wage as many hard working Americans do - should they all be shot or end up on the street? Anyone who doesn't have to deal with those kinds of challenges believes that they are above other people -- it's just your pride talking. You think that since you don't have to live that way - that no one has to -but you're wrong. It's not just illegal immigrants who are forced into lower paying jobs. There are people who are working their tails off and still not breaking $30K. You're just as much of a leech as anyone else. Expecting your large corporation or whoever to give you a lucrative salary and benefits while making it impossible for other people to get health insurance because they or their smaller company can't afford to get into the large big corporate group plan rate. Unfortunately, COSTS are the same across the board - but income is not. Maybe YOU should hire some of those leeches and give them a lucrative salary and benefits - many are working much harder and longer hours than you've ever dreamed of. For alot of people, a tax break = not living on the street! For some people a couple thousand dollars is the difference between survival and being homeless. How about our rich politicians and lawmakers forgo one of their raises one year?

The problem with the flat tax is that the rich use more municipalities then the poor and middle class combine. Only a few abuse the welfare system. I think right now you should be more worried about how the money is being spent.

I sincerely doubt a 9.7% flat tax would generate the same revenue as the current system, the flat tax rate would probably need to be much higher

No, because a flat tax would only benefit the wealthy and not the majority of the poor/middle class people who actually pay their taxes.

Think about this: Assume you had a flat tax of 15%. If you pay a tax of 15% on 175,000 versus 17,000 a year who do you think it will effect more. Sure it may seem fair, but in relaity it isn't.

it was time twenty years ago when Steve Forbes presented it, but it will never pass. The problem is the Pelosi...ites. Liberals, like her take too much pleasure in legislation by finance, otherwise known as tax and spend. Reagan proved the tax rates were too high from the liberal govt then and nothing has changed as they are getting ready to obliterate the bush tax cuts.

Yes. It is time. Such a system would benefit people who are trying to accrue wealth. Opponents of the flat tax are people who make their living interpretting the incomprehensible tax code. Too bad. Find another more legitimate job.

YES!

But it won't happen because all of our politicians would be paying about 50% more in taxes if that did happen. Plus ALL of thier friends and campaign funders.
