Persia was a beautiful country with some beautiful buildings and lovely people. They benefited from having an early civilisation, they made magnificent carpets. They were pro-Western and many of the wealthier people sent their sons and daughters to be educated in England or America. Then sometime around the 1960`s they changed their name to Iran, and exiled their King and his family. This led to the return from France of Ayatollah Khomeini a Muslim `priest` who then, to-gether with other religious leaders ran the country as a religious state. Foreign policy was up-turned, they now hated the west. Policies at home were up-turned, the lives of women changed dramatically and every thing that was representative of the west was changed .It must have seemed, to the educated women, that they had returned to the dark ages. I do hope that things will change over there soon, and that they will return to being friends with the west. I would very much like to visit the country, but with the political climate as it is, I don`t see that happening.

Fairly open ended question. Ancient Persia or modern Iran ? They occupy similar boundries, are largely the same ethnodemographic (with variations one would suppose) and seek prominence on the world stage. The later through pursuing a nuclear weapons program. The former through conquest.

We have many reasons to both fear and respect them.

Much remains to be seen as to how the story unfolds between Persia and the West.
