If you just mainly surf the web, chat and email the MacBook is the way to go. It may be a bit more expensive than your plain-jane Windows PC laptop (not so much if you configure, say a Dell, with the same specs), but with the ability to run Mac OS X and Windows XP (or Vista) natively it's a heck of a deal . **PLUS - No need to worry about viruses, adware, spyware etc.

**I'm not saying that Macs are impervious to viruses etc. However, the fact remains that there are currently no Mac viruses "in the wild".

I would get Dell. I have one for pleasure and I also have a Toshiba for work. It all depends on how reliable as far as maintenance and memory along with how much hard drive you need. If you require more than 100 gig hard drive then definitely look at a Toshiba. I hope this helps.

If you can find a model you can afford, then get IBM/Lenovo: PC Magazine rated theirs 200 times as sturdy as others, and I know from experience mine has been a true workhorse (I have an IBM and an HP - both are great, the IBM is older)
