Well, there are a few things you can do. One is to get on hornomal birth control which will lessen the cramps and keep things on a regular cycle. It can also help lesson the bleeding.
Otherwise, your body evolves over time and will do what it will do. You can try things like cutting caffiene out of your diet and eating a balanced and healthy diet full of fruits and vegetables, as well as regular exercise, and this can help as well. I would also try taking ibuprofin a couple days before your period starts. The ibuprofin dissolves an enzyme which causes the uterus to contract at a higher rate, and higher intensity than it once would, and can keep the pain to a minimum.
Discuss these options with your doctor. They really are your best ally in your health.

You may want to get a second opinion.

Ask your doc to prescribe you some Naproxin. I wouldn't think it is harmful. I know someone else who had the same issue that you do. If I'm not mistaken, it is an anti-inflammatory. She swore by it. Even if you are hitting early stages, he shouldn't contest to finding some mild relief for your discomfort. Hope this helps.

My mom had the same problem. She religiously stuck with heating pads, Pamprin, and Estroven.
