In many Asian countries (and in many other parts of the world), aggressive driving is the norm. There are Asians who bring that driving style with them when they come here. And so people just generalize from the ones they see.

See the answer below mine -- a good example of how it happens. She has one Asian friend, so she thinks she can speak about all Asian visitors and immigrants. Sheesh.

I have never heard this stereotype regarding ethnic asians..
I have traveled through Asia / India / S.E. Asia / China etc.
and can tell you that the driving is absolutely crazy but that
is a cultural / national thing and is not racial / ethnic...
Asians / Orientals raised in the USA do not drive any crazier
than any other American...
Drivers in Latin America are pretty careless also..

Its called lack of experience - especially in the older or middleaged females that typically don't drive. They are usually scared to death, Grip the steering wheel like a vise grip, use both lanes. fail to signal and usually drive under the speed limit. Its usually the male head of household that drives but say your prayers if it his wife or girlfriend with little experience. The younger generation usually have driver's training so they are no problem. The older ones often hire paid instructors who are so scared after a few trips they pass the students on as a means of survival! How do I know? - used to a driver's ed teacher! This is not an ethnic thing at all, just a cultural rerality.

This stereotype is very true, if you apply it only to Asians who grew up in very populated cities. Public transportation in asia is amazing. Many never drive a car, or anything like it, until they are about 23 years old or more.
Driver's lic. and registration, In asia is very expensive. 700$ in Hong Kong just to register for a lic. Growing up, they don't even have room for a toy car or anything else to practice on as kids. Space is taken for granted in most of the USA. To put the car in a straight line is hard for them. I have taught many friends from Hong Kong How to drive.

It isn't they are careless they just have not had experiance.

If you are American born Asian, most likely this doesn't apply to you

I believe that a lot of people are bad drivers. The spanish people being the worst. I'm sorry, but everytime I have a problem it's usually because of them. They drive 15 miles below the speed limit and think that as soon as they put on their blinker, you should let them in. If you ever drive in Northern VA on 66, you will know exactly what I am talking about. I find it odd that these people have driver's license but can't speak a word of english. Last time I checked, everything was written in english. If they can't speak the language, how can they drive. I also think it's rediculous to give the written part of the driving test in spanish. Again, no one is doing those people a service by depriving them of learning the language. Perhaps that is the main reason a lot of americans get sick of them. Thank you and this is my opinion.
