If you already have a mobile phone and want to get a new one but would like to keep your old number you have to phone your current service provider tell them you would like to leave but keep your original phone number and they issue you with a pac code, you then contact your new service provider whom will transfer your old number to your new phone. If you dont want to keep your original number then no need for the pac code.

A PAC code is only used if you would like to take your mobile number with you when you start your new contract with another service privider.

A Pac number is assigned to your mobile phone number, you give this number (PAC) to you new service provider and when you new phone activated you will still have the same phone number as on your last phone.

A PAC code enables you to keep the same number when you're switching network, or moving from PAYG (pay as you go) to contract and vice-versa. A Pac usually takes around 5-7 days if changing network. But 24 hrs for same network switch.
