The first public high school still exists and is now called "English High". It is located in the Jamaica Plain section of Boston. It was first formed in 1821 by the civil leaders of Boston in order to provide education to those who were not wealthy. Boys only though, and you had to pass an entrance exam to get in.

The first high school? Good question. We have always had schools, but usually all grades went to the same school, some different grades were even in the same classroom, especially in rural areas where there weren't a lot of students. I assume wealthier students had tutors and governesses until they went to university or an apprenticeship.

I'm going to check back and see if anyone has the answer!
