Tuition doesn't go according to how "good" a school is. It goes according to whether the school is private or public, and some other things, like for instance:
Many private colleges charge a list price of about $30,000 per year for tuition plus about $10,000 for housing and food (room and board). But, if you are a good enough student to get into an elite college like Duke, Harvard, Stanford, etc then the school will loan or grant you money to attend if your family is poor. At Harvard, if your family makes less than $65,000 a year, then tuition is free. Harvard and other elite schools do not generally give scholarships for being a great students. Their aid is "need based" but if you go down the list to schools ranked about #40 to # 100 then they are anxious to get great students so a very good applicant can get a 50% or even 100% discount on tuition. This means that you can get a very good deal at schools like Boston University, Fordham, Temple, George Washington, U of Richmond, and some other very good schools, provided that you are a top student. It really pays to have top marks!
State school generally charge much less for students who come from their state - and many states if you are a good student you can get a major discount on the tuition. In our state, you can get almost 100% discount if you are in the top 10% of your HS class.
That means a lot of kids are attending state schools for almost no tuition - in a lot of cases they do still have to pay for room and board.
If you want to attend a state school in a different state from where you live, then you probably will have to pay an "out of state" tuition that is about equal to a private school.

It all depends on the program you're taking, but don't be surprised if it's between 4 and 8 thousand smackers.

it depends on... are you talking about private or public?
if it's public, then there are in-state and out-of-state tuition.
