I breasfeed my 1 month old son, I burp him every time, but as soon us I lay him down he looks like he is in pain, and is having heartburn or something, and starts crying. So I pick him up and try burping him again, and this goes on for an hour or so. What can it be and what can I do to relieve his pain.

First, you might want to try laying him down on his left side. It's supposed to aide in digestion. You also might want to look into an infant massage book for a massage on colic. I think it's called windmill or something like that. It's great! My son wasn't "collicky" persay, but he didn't burp well. Using the infant massage got him to move gas through his digestive system and calmed him a lot. After I nursed, I also found it helped to hold my son upright for a while, even if he fell asleep. I'd lay his head on my shoulder and let the milk go down into his stomach for a while before laying him down. Good luck.

Keep him on an angle after feedings and try feeding him more often. He is probably experiencing reflux which may be because he is overeating or may be because the valve of his stomach isn't quite developed yet (this is why babies spit up, it is just a question of degrees).

Also it may help to keep him on an angle during feedings, about 20-45 degrees.

I want to be clear that this probably isn't GERD and even if it is you should try to keep it under control with physical changes rather than medications as all medications carry risks. Even something as milkd as gripe water or gas drops should be used regularly.

Try babywearing as well, but watch the kind of carrier you use as certain carriers put pressure on the stomach in a bad way. However as he is still young enough to face in most carriers should be fine. Crying makes reflux worse.

Also try putting him in a swing or bouncy seat after feeds, this are generally on an incline. Also my son burped best if I just kept him upright and didn't pat him. Patting seemed to make him tense up. Rubbing the top of the head also is supposed to make them burp. You can also take a break and burp every 5 min.

Maybe you need to check your diet to see if there is something you may be eating that could be causing your baby to have gas. Also try rubbing his back instead of patting, this sometimes helps work a burp out of the baby. One thing I don't think they stress enough to a breastfeeding mom is how important her diet is to the baby, do some Internet research about good things and bad things to eat while breastfeeding, you may also want to research colicky babies and hints to help calm their tummies.
