The planets all go around the sun in the same direction because all the planets in this solar system were created from the same cloud of dust and gas that created the sun. As this giant dust ball started to condense into a smaller cloud, other smaller clusters began to condense within this cloud. Much like the eye on Jupiter. Since this cloud was rotating in a particular direction, all the planets that were created also orbit in this same direction.
The reason why all the planets lay flat is because this is known as the suns accretion disk. This is the plane in which the gravity from the sun is its' strongest. Some hypothesis this is because of the nature of space-time warping due to the rotation of the sun. One important note however, is that Pluto, which is no longer classified as a planet, does not lay "flat" on the plane with the others. It's orbit is slightly offset.

Before the solar system was formed, it was a swirling disc of dust and gasses, left over from preturberances likely from some sort of supernova event. As this disc cooled, clumps began to form due to gravitational forces. As the clumps grew bigger, so did each clump's gravity, thus pulling more and more dust and gas in to each clump. These clumps over hundreds of millions of years became planets, and each moved around the sun in the same direction as the initial swirling gas/dust disc. And each planet exists in the same plane as that disc as well.

The original rotating disk of material (dust, debris, gas etc) that formed the planets was moving in one direction. As the planets formed (coalesed from thier gravity) the material fell into toward the center of the planet and the whole mass kept moving in the same direction as the rotating disk of material.
The plane was also determined by that same disk of material.

well since the sun is stationary gravity, it holds down all the planets with help of the moons that orbit the planets. gravity is a real powerful player inthe galaxy, the reason the planets are flat lined on the gravitational belt is basically becasue of the weight of the suns gravity on them

there direction is a risidual effect of gas cloud momentum during its formation. and there not on a flat plane thats just how artists draw them to make it easier to use as a teaching tool.orbits are just like electrons going around a nuclius of a molicuel only at a very different speedin relation to our size.

They all got their direction and plane from the angular momentum from the material out of which the solar system originally formed.
