WHY!
OK you need atoms and something that goes bang.

An atomic bomb (ie fission, not hydrogen fusion, which is usually known as an H-bomb) requires a bunch of fissile material (usually uranium enriched to have a higher-than-natural percentage of its most fissile isotopes, but possibly plutonium or something else). This is called the pit.

The thing you have to do is to compress the pit to create a critical mass and set off a runaway chain reaction. The best way is to surround it with a spherical shell of high explosives shaped to blast inward. A simpler (but less efficient) way is to take divide the fissile material into two subcritical pieces. You use something like a gun to smash the two pieces together into a critical mass. To get the reaction started and explode efficiently, you also want a device to produce a bunch of neutrons to seed the reaction. Once the chain reaction gets going, the fissions create their own neutrons, but to get things ramped up fast, the bomb needs a little help. The rest of the bomb is electronics to time the explosions and command/control/encryption/safety stuff.

The simplest design is the shot gun design.

This consists of a sphere of plutonium or weapons grade uranium with a wedge or cone section removed from it.

This sphere is placed at the end of a tube like the mussel of a gun and the removed section is shot into the sphere creating super critical mass.

Boom.

This is the design that we used for fat man and little boy.

The way described by the poster just above me is also correct. This method is called the implosion design and yields much greater energy than the shotgun design.

The implosion design is what we use now.

1. plutonium

2. shaped explosive charge.

3. a neutron source called an initiator, one of the few remaining "secrets" of the a-bomb

the shaped explosive compresses the plutonium until it reaches critical mass. The neutrons from the initiator set the chain reaction off.

A highly accurate timed triggering of conventional explosives to implode your plutonium and crush it as quick as possible, then the chain reaction will go from there,.
