Essentially I pay about $66.00 a month for HOA. That includes: Weekly trash pickup, blanket insurance, water and some other small things (public lighting, grass cutting of public areas etc...) I was wondering is this worth it. Like if you purchase those things sepeartly will it cost more/less. Why do we have HOA.

If you're moving into a townhouse/condo complex you probably won't have a choice. Typically it's manditory that you belong to the HOA if you want to buy the home?

When you live in something like a townhouse/condo you typically share the expense of items like trash pickup, landscaping, outside building maintenance etc.... with all the other home owners. To be honest $66/month is cheap. You could pay $30/month for basic landscaping alone.

The "officers" of the HOA are responsible to negotiate on behalf of the members of the HOA with contractors who provide these services. If you live in a townhouse for example, its to your advantage that all the buildings are painted the same color or use a compatible color scheme.

Basically the HOA is there to regulate what goes on in the community...they ensure that it is clean, looks the same, they dictate what you can and can't do to your home/condo/townhouse. The fees probably would cost more if you did it on your own, but I personally don't like the HOA because they control everything about the outward appearance of your home, down to how tall the tree's are and what decorations you put outside at x-mas time!!
