One hour is great, especially when attending your first game. There is a pregame skate for both teams. They do more stretching and shooting and standing around. There aren't many fans arrived yet. It is your best chance to get close to your favourite players for a longer length of time. Especially if you have lower bowl seats. Or just sit back and soak in what players are up to. It gets boring pretty quick, but it is great if you haven't done it before.

At half an hour before the game, players go back to the dressing room and they resurface the ice. You can go check out the Saddledome concourse and watch fans arrive and get ready for the game. Get your beer and hot dogs and souvenirs, etc. The players come out again a couple of minutes before game time. That skate and stretch is very quick, not the same as showing up early.

I am a hockey fanatic, and I always arrive to the games anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour early just to watch them practice and maybe get a bite to eat before the game starts. In fact, the Las Vegas Wranglers (a minor league team) is the minor league affiliate of the Flames.

Have a great time, and don't forget to scream and shout til you loose your voice. Hockey is great fun, especially when a fight breaks out, and it helps if your team wins.

Yes, you should absolutely get there an hour early. I lived in Calgary my whole life, and if I was you, I'd park at the C-train lot on 39th Avenue, and take the train from there. getting there an hour early lets you settle in, grab a few drinks if that's your thing, and watch the warm-ups. I'm jealous! I went to my first game in 1987 against Winnpeg, and until I left Calgary in 2002, I went to at least one game a year. Have fun!
