I only have one issue with my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The brake lights do not come on when i press the pedal.I have checked the bulbs and the fuses associated with the brake lights and they still do not work. The upper brake light works and the brake lights do however come on when the lights are on but not when they are pushed by the brake pedal. Can it be a loose connector on the peddle itself? or do you think it is an electrical problem.

if the "upper" light as you call it comes on when you press the brake pedal then the problem is GROUND. The negative terminal. Use a voltage probe "Lighted Tester" and press the brake pedal. If the test light comes on....and you're sure the test light has a good GROUND then you know your lights have no ground. If you cannot find the loose ground you can always create your own by tapping into the ground lead and fastening it to the body securely. If you do this make sure the "tap" and the ground are as safe as you can make them from corrosion. Usually a silicon will work well.

Are you saying that they come on "dimly" when the lights are turned on? Because that would just be the running lights. The bulbs in the taillights are typically 1157 bulbs and they actually have two filaments inside them. One burns dim (the running light), and the other burns brighter (the brake light).

If the running lights are coming on and the brake lights still dont work, it could be the switch from the brake pedal itself. if you have a test light, you can trace the circuit yourself. First check at that fuse to make sure you have voltage there. If so, check at the switch on the brake pedal on both sides, before and after the switch. (you will have to hold the brake pedal down to check the voltage after the switch.) if you dont have voltage after the switch then you need to replace the switch. If you do have voltage then you need to keep tracing the wires back to the tailights and see at what point you dont have votage. Could be a bad ground wire on the light socket in the tail light housing but i doubt it.

Those are all fine answers above.
However, none of them are correct.

There is a poor connection between the tail light assembly and the body of your Jeep.
Electicity is flowing to them, but not able to continue to ground. That's why the upper brake light works, but the tail lights don't.

When the parking lights are turned on, it is giving the brake lights a path to ground through the parking lights wires.

You will have to find the ground wire from the lights to the body of your jeep and clean the connecting area of the wire to the body.

Below is the URL for the brake light switch which is probably what went bad. Manually press it down with your hand and have a friend see if the brake lights work. If they do not work, they run $13.95 at this internet site. But call your local automotive parts store, like Auto Zone (My personal favorite) or other place. The dealer will charge you 3 arms and a leg now.

Because you have more than one light out but one working I would be checking for a missing ground common to both brake lights. You can add a temporary ground to prove this is really the problem.

definitely a problem with the connections to the brake pedal...have to admit that Jeep brake systems has had a long record of issues, both electrical and air pressure on the anti-lock brakes. You'll definitely have to take it in to an auto electrical expert to make sure if you can't get it fixed...Good luck!

check under the dash for a little switch, get a OHM meter and check to see if it 0s out when the button or switch is press. if it does then you might have a loose wire some in the body. make sure the wires aren't crossed at the light bulb too. good luck

It sounds like a loose wire. The may may have even completely broke off, it may have melted... lots of things. I doubt its the pedal because the other lights come on. I would checkout the wiring professionaly quickly, you don't want to risk an electrical fire.

there is a switch at the pedal - that should be it

the switch should be easy to see BUT there is a weird problem that has occurred on these jeeps - it has too do with the light socket having too much resistance - if you have it you have to replace the taillights THE TEST - if your brake lights work with the lights off but not with the lights on you are screwed - new taillights
